Community Spirit

The Banda Spirit reaches far afield including involvement in nominated annual school charities as well as co-curricular and extra-curricular community projects. That Spirit pervades throughout the Banda community. Richard Musau, our own ICT Infrastructure Manager has been very quietly supporting an orphanage, which has become a school.

Richard Musau, is usually known around The Banda School has one of the ICT ‘Guru’ team who keeps The Banda’s ICT learning options accessible and on-line! Always available, always supporting and always ‘fixing’, Richard moves throughout The Banda supporting pupils and staff and maintains our IT Servers. In his spare time, he gives of his time to a local school that supports orphaned children.

Established in 2000 the Overcomers Caring Ministries is an orphanage that then became a school to accommodate and provide basic education for abandoned and orphaned children whose parents have passed away from HIV and AIDS. The school Richard has come to know includes two rooms, which are used as both classrooms and (after school as the boys and girls) dormitories.

Located on Magadi Road, Nairobi, the Mondas' family decided to introduce an educational aspect to their orphanage to improve on early childhood development. Eunice, the Headmistress and Matron of the school has, Richard shares: “confirmed most of the teachers are volunteers. Similar to most schools in Kenya, they are offering the 8-4-4 system, accommodating pre-school up to Year 8, with 96 children enrolled and 22 living at the orphanage.”

Richard and his family visit and support this school regularly.  Jane Nyoike, Head of Human Resources at The Banda first became aware of Richard’s involvement. Subsequently Jane was able to offer Richard, Banda school desks, chairs and other office equipment that the school might find useful. The pupils and the School were very grateful.

At The Banda, three charities are supported annually (chosen by the pupils).  In addition, the staff of The Banda supports additional school based projects in Kibera.  It is super to highlight Richard’s project and share The Banda’s involvement.
