Our Preparatory School’s Music Department | The Banda

MUSIC PLAYS AN IMPORTANT PART IN THE LIFE OF OUR SCHOOL.  OVERSEEN BY OUR INSPIRING COORDINATOR OF PERFORMING ARTS AND HEAD OF MUSIC, INSPIRING PERFORMANCES, SPECIALIST TEACHING AND ENDLESS MUSICAL POTENTIAL IS NURTURED AND EMBRACED.

Every child takes part in class music lessons as part of the British education system and the opportunity is provided for all individuals to have instrumental or singing lessons if they wish.

We aim to provide the opportunity for pupils of all abilities to participate in musical activities at an appropriate level and nurture individual talent so that the musical pupil may be challenged to realise their potential.

The Banda offers peripatetic instrumental lesson from Reception class with instruments available for hire as required.  Pupils may select from more popular instruments such as piano, guitar and recorder to less familiar instruments such as the Cello, Trombone and French Horn.  70+ pupils alone have taken up an exciting and innovative programme of drumming from an inspiring peripatetic specialist which has resulted in a dedicated informal concert to drums alone including the all-girls drummers!

Ensembles at The Banda include:

  • Lower School and Upper School choirs for children who enjoy singing.
  • Lower School and Upper School orchestra.
  • Deep Treble - Boys only Choir.
  • Chamber Choir - Children from the Upper School are selected and invited to attend this choir.

Regular performance opportunities through formal and informal concerts, school assemblies, school productions and inter-school festivals help to build confidence and allow pupils to experience the enjoyment of performing in front of an audience.   The Banda introduced a Vocal Festival from March 2015 which is open to both IAPS and Kenyan 8-4-4 schools who sing both individually and in groups at the Under 11 and Under 13 age group.

Children at The Banda are prepared for ABRSM music exams throughout the year with children examined once a year by visiting UK examiners. They achieve outstanding high musical instrument and voice results.
