Our School’s Kiswahili Department | The Banda

"Hamjambo! Twajivunia kuzungumza lugha ya Kiswahili shuleni mwetu"

A BRITISH SCHOOL IN KENYA, IN EAST AFRICA, THE BANDA SEEKS TO EMBRACE THE CULTURE, TRADITIONS AND LANGUAGE OF THE COUNTRY WHERE OUR PUPILS  RESIDE, WHETHER THAT BE TRANSIENT OR PERMANENT.  KISWAHILI IS MOST DEFINITELY ON OUR CURRICULUM!  ASANTE-SANA!

HU-JAMBO?  KARIBU KISWAHILI!

The national language of Kenya is Kiswahili.  Kiswahili is a Bantu language spoken in much of East Africa by approximately 140 million people.

It is taught from Year 3 to Year 8 in our preparatory school where we ensure at least a basic grasp of the language.  Most of our children learn to speak some Kiswahili at home and through immersion in the local culture.  We aim to teach them the more formal elements of the language and to provide the children with an understanding of the basic rules of grammar.
