"Mathematics at The Banda involves: understanding, enjoyment and challenge"

quote-mark Head of Math, The Banda School

AT THE BANDA, WE BELIEVE MATHEMATICS IS MORE THAN JUST A SUBJECT – IT IS A WAY OF THINKING.

We aim to give all children an experience of Mathematics based on three core principles: understanding, enjoyment and challenge. At every level, we use technology in the classroom and e- learning to encourage the pupils to ask a most important question, which is simply, “Why?” If a child understands why a technique works they have a much better chance of being able to apply that method in a different context.

We aim to convince children that Mathematics is not a ‘black and white’ subject; the goal is not the answer, but the process and there are many different ways of arriving at the answer. If a child is getting every question right, they are not being sufficiently challenged. The challenge in Mathematics is unpicking and analysing the underlying concepts, extending problems and drawing connections between ideas. In this way, Mathematics can intrigue, inspire and make real sense to all our pupils.  Our accelerated sets will finish the Level 3 course by the end of Year 7 so that the following September term of Year 8 is scholarship work.  Pupils sitting Level 1 will be prepared to finish Level 1 by the end of Year 7 so that they can cover most of Level 2 in September and hopefully they may aspire to sit the Level 2 examination.

Since 2013 The Banda takes part in the International Gauss Test set by the University of Waterloo. This test sets 20 multiple choice questions based on course work and 5 more difficult problems at the end of the paper structured to test the candidates ability to ‘think outside the box’. Our Year 7 and Year 8 accelerated sets sit these papers. For further information on this please visit the website www.cemc.uwaterloo.ca for past papers and solutions.
