Our Preparatory School’s English Department | The Banda

"I love English because it brings out all of my crazy ideas"

quote-mark Laura Staley, Year 5

OUR AIM IS TO ENSURE THAT PUPILS AT THE BANDA GAIN AS MUCH ENJOYMENT AS POSSIBLE FROM ALL ASPECTS OF READING AND WRITING.

To encourage a love of reading, our teachers work closely with pupils to ensure that they have suitable and enjoyable reading books ‘on the go’ at all times. We want all our pupils to gain a ‘love of reading’ from non-fiction as well as fiction books.

English lessons at our preparatory school, which are completely in line with the British education system, aim to foster an air of creativity and this is done through building confidence and self-belief in all pupils. We want them to know and believe that they can all be writers and that every piece of work will be valued. Children are taught to constantly seek ways in which to improve and better their work, and build on skills which prepare them, not just for the necessary requirements of Common Entrance, but for a world in which a mastery of the English language is such a valued and well-respected tool.

The study of English is taken way beyond the classroom at The Banda. Regular events such as Book Week, verse speaking competitions, dress up days, visiting authors and poetry competitions all help to cement a love and appreciation of literature and writing amongst our pupils. Our teachers are always keen to incorporate Drama into the learning experience, which leads to a number of performances throughout the school year.
