THE BANDA'S PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT IS A BUZZING HIVE OF ACTIVITY. FROM CHOIRS TO ROCK BANDS, STUDIO RECORDING TO PLAY PRACTICE, ALL OUR PUPILS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE FULLY INVOLVED.
Plays and Musical Productions
Each year group has the chance to take part in a school play or production. Pegasus Early Years and Lower School plays take place in the second term, while the Upper School produce a Year 7 Shakespeare en promenade production in the second term and the main school productions in June and July. Regular showcase concerts throughout the year allow our young musicians and vocalists to demonstrate their progress and development.
Recent shows include Matilda, Cats, Oliver, Into The Woods and The Lion King.
Singing at The Banda
A thriving vocal scene includes opportunities to study voice with our singing specialist and every year The Banda hosts the inter-school Vocal Festival. Both the Lower School and Upper School have a non-auditioning Main Choir who rehearse twice a week, preparing for informal concerts, Christmas, assemblies and of course, the Vocal Festival.
Chamber Choir is made up of pupils selected on their musicality and vocal ability. Singing in several different languages and styles, Chamber Choir vocal music tends to have been specially arranged for the choir by one of the music staff, resulting in a completely original repertoire and one that is catered to challenge and meet the strengths of the singers involved.
‘Deep Treble’ is a vocal group made up entirely of Upper School boys. Inspired by Glee and Pitch Perfect, ‘Deep Treble’ tends to perform a more contemporary repertoire, using a combination of singing, beat boxing and body percussion. There is even talk of introducing some street dance!
Both the Lower School and the Upper School have an orchestra who play at major school events, assemblies and concerts. Many pupils from the orchestra are selected to play with the band for the main school productions. A specialist group of drummers was put together to accompany The Lion King, led by our extremely able drum tutor.
2016 sees the debut performances of The Banda's very own rock band 'Peggy and The Bandits'. Specialising in rock, pop and soul music; guitarists, drummers, pianists and singers are selected from across the Upper School to become members of the band.
We aim to give our pupils the opportunity to perform on the stage as regularly as possible during their time at The Banda.
Traditionally, Year 7 perform their own version of a Shakespeare play in January, which is a culmination of cross-curricular work covered in their English and Drama lessons. Last year's production was Richard III; 2017 will see a spectacular performance of MacBeth.
Pupils from across the Upper School take part in the Verse Speaking Competition during the second term. This enables young actors to choose and direct their own performance of a poem, and receive feedback by an external adjudicator. Additionally, our Drama Club has enjoyed huge success at drama competitions including winning the inter-school IAPS Badminton Trophy for Drama in 2014 and 2015.
The Music Department installed the Kwenzi Marinade Recording Studio in 2015. Here our pupils can record, edit and publish their own professional standard recordings.
The Performing Arts Department is ever expanding and there are plenty of exciting new project and activities lined up including a MAD (Music, Art and Drama) trip to the USA in April 2017.
